🏡 How Often Should You Mow Your Lawn for a Healthy Yard?

Keeping your lawn healthy and beautiful isn’t just about watering and fertilizing—it all starts with how often you mow. Mowing at the right frequency can make the difference between a lush, green yard and a patchy, stressed lawn.

But how often should you really mow?

Let's break it down:

🌱 General Rule of Thumb

Most lawns should be mowed once a week during the growing season (spring through early fall). This helps keep the grass at an ideal height, encourages thick growth, and prevents weeds from taking over.

However, not all lawns grow at the same speed!

  • Spring and early summer: Weekly mowing is usually best.

  • Late summer and fall: Every 10–14 days might be enough, depending on the heat and moisture levels.

  • Winter: In many areas, mowing slows way down or even stops altogether.

📏 Ideal Grass Height

A common mistake is cutting the grass too short (called "scalping"). For a healthy lawn, you should never remove more than one-third of the grass blade at a time.

Typical ideal lawn heights:

  • Cool-season grasses: Keep between 2.5–4 inches

  • Warm-season grasses: Keep between 1.5–3 inches

If you mow too short, the lawn can dry out, burn, or leave room for weeds to creep in.

☀️ Weather and Growth Matter Too

Grass grows faster after rain or fertilizing. During rainy seasons or after feeding, you might need to mow more often to stay ahead of fast growth.

On the other hand, during droughts or extreme heat, mowing less often (and cutting higher) helps the lawn survive stress.
